Known at the South’s Grand Hotel, The Peabody Memphis opened in 1869 and has since remained a stalwart of tradition and hospitality.
A handful of things come to mind when you think of Memphis: Barbecue, Beale Street, and Elvis. But one of the most beloved is the resident ducks at The Peabody Hotel. It all started back in the 1930s when then-general manager Frank Schutt and a friend spent a weekend hunting (along with a bottle of whiskey). When he got back to the hotel, a few live-duck decoys remained, so he plopped them into the hotel’s fountain. Needless to say, it was a hit with the guests, and a tradition was born. Each day at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., five resident ducks march down the lobby for all to see.
The look here would best be described as grand. Guests are welcomed in the massive hotel lobby before checking into one of the newly renovated rooms. The refresh has added upgrades like modern decor and updated bathrooms but manages to keep a few historic touches. There's a stunning Grecian-inspired indoor pool with pops of greenery and a rooftop with views for days. Add to that a myriad of dining options, retail shopping, and the Feather Spa -- it's one of those properties that you never have to leave.

The hotel feels both historic and luxurious, but it draws all kinds of travelers. The palatial lobby is the hub for all of the action (and it's also where Elvis Presley signed his first contract; his prom was held in the ballroom). The space has been referred to as the "living room of Memphis," and it's been said that the Mississippi Delta begins in the lobby of The Peabody. Flanked by retail shops, the lobby is where you'll find guests sipping pre-dinner cocktails in the lobby bar while waiting patiently for the parade of ducks.
